Getting to Chennai Airport: taxi options, timing, and costs
Airport layout
Chennai Airport (MAA) has two terminals on Tirusulam, along GST Road (NH45).
Terminal 1 (Domestic): Handles all domestic flights. The departure entry is on the upper level. Arrivals exit at ground level.
Terminal 4 (International): Opened in 2024, replacing the old Terminal 3. Located 500 meters south of Terminal 1, connected by a covered walkway.
Both terminals share the same approach road from GST Road. During peak hours (6:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM), the approach road itself takes 15-20 minutes from the GST Road junction.
How early should you leave?
For domestic flights, airlines recommend arriving 2 hours before departure. For international flights, 3 hours. Add your travel time from home on top of that.
Here are drive times from different parts of Chennai to the airport, during normal traffic:
| Area | Distance | Off-peak time | Peak time |
|---|---|---|---|
| T. Nagar | 14 km | 30 min | 55 min |
| Anna Nagar | 22 km | 40 min | 75 min |
| Adyar / Besant Nagar | 12 km | 25 min | 50 min |
| Velachery | 6 km | 15 min | 30 min |
| OMR (Thoraipakkam) | 16 km | 30 min | 60 min |
| Ambattur | 24 km | 45 min | 80 min |
| Tambaram | 10 km | 20 min | 40 min |
Peak hours are 8:00 AM to 10:30 AM and 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM. The Inner Ring Road (IRR) from Adyar to Tirusulam is the fastest route for South Chennai. From North and West Chennai, take the Kathipara flyover directly onto GST Road.
Early morning flights
Flights between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM are common on the Chennai-Bangalore and Chennai-Delhi routes. At 3:00 AM, Chennai roads are empty; you can reach the airport from anywhere in the city within 30 minutes.
The challenge is finding a taxi at 2:30 AM. App-based cabs have low availability before 4 AM. Drop taxi services let you pre-book a car for early morning pickups, with the driver confirmed the night before. This removes the 3 AM scramble for a ride.
Airport pickup points
Domestic arrivals (Terminal 1): Exit through gate 2 or 3. The taxi pickup zone is a 2-minute walk to the right. Pre-booked taxis wait in the dedicated parking area opposite the arrivals exit.
International arrivals (Terminal 4): Exit and look for the parking structure on your left. Pre-booked cabs park on the ground floor. The pickup zone has clear signage.
If your driver cannot enter the pickup zone, they will wait at the free parking lot near the cargo terminal, a 5-minute drive from arrivals. Confirm the exact location by phone before you exit.

Tips for a smooth airport taxi ride
Confirm the terminal. Domestic airlines sometimes shift between gates in Terminal 1. Check your airline’s SMS for the exact terminal and gate number.
Share your flight details. Give your driver the flight number and departure time. They’ll track the airport traffic and adjust the route.
Keep cash for tolls. Even if your taxi has FASTag, some airport parking gates require cash payment.
Book the night before for early flights. A confirmed booking at 10 PM means a driver is assigned and will reach your pickup point on time, regardless of the hour.
