Salem to Yercaud: a quick hill station escape by taxi

Misty green hills of a South Indian hill station

Why Yercaud

Yercaud is the closest hill station to Salem, sitting at 1,515 meters on the Shevaroy Hills of the Eastern Ghats. The drive is 30 km and takes about 1 hour. No other hill station in Tamil Nadu is this accessible; Ooty requires 3 hours of ghat roads, and Kodaikanal takes 4 hours from the nearest city.

If you’re passing through Salem on an intercity trip, or you live in Salem and need a quick weekend reset, Yercaud is the obvious pick.

The drive up

The first 10 km from Salem is flat. You pass through the town of Hasthampatti and reach the foothills. A large arch marks the start of the ghat road.

From here, 20 hairpin bends climb through dense forest. The road is narrower than the Ooty ghat, but carries far less traffic. You’ll share the road with local buses, a few tourist cars, and the occasional coffee-loaded truck coming down.

Each bend is numbered. The tightest curves are between bends 8 and 14. Your driver will honk at every blind corner; this is standard practice and keeps oncoming vehicles alert.

The whole climb takes 35-40 minutes. Once you crest the final bend, the temperature drops by 8-10 degrees from Salem, and the landscape shifts to coffee plantations and silver oak trees.

What to see

Yercaud Lake: The center of the town. Rowboats cost Rs 100 for 30 minutes. A paved path circles the lake; the walk takes 20 minutes. Early mornings are best, when mist sits on the water surface.

Lady’s Seat: A viewpoint 2 km from the lake, overlooking the Salem plains 1,500 meters below. On clear days you can see the outline of Salem city. There’s a small telescope (Rs 10) and a few snack stalls.

Pagoda Point and Grange: 5 km from the lake. Four natural rock pillars that look like a pagoda from a distance. The Grange is a nearby estate with walking trails through coffee and pepper plantations.

Bear’s Cave: A narrow natural cave formation 2 km south of the lake. The path is steep and uneven; wear proper shoes. It takes 15 minutes to walk down and 25 minutes to climb back.

Kiliyur Falls: The most scenic spot in Yercaud, located 3 km from the lake. The falls drop 90 meters into a valley. You’ll descend about 250 stone steps to reach the base. The falls are strongest between September and January. During summer, the flow reduces to a trickle.

Best time to visit

October to February: Temperatures between 10C and 22C. Mornings are foggy, afternoons are clear. This is the most comfortable window.

March to May: Warmer, but still 5-8 degrees cooler than Salem. The coffee blossoms in March fill the air with a strong fragrance. April brings the Yercaud Summer Festival with flower shows and boat races.

June to September: Monsoon season. Kiliyur Falls is at full force, and the forests are lush. Roads can be slippery. Leeches appear on forest trails after rain.

What to pack

  • A light jacket or hoodie (even summer evenings are cool)
  • Walking shoes with grip for Kiliyur Falls and Bear’s Cave
  • Cash for boat rides, parking fees, and viewpoint entry
  • Sunscreen for midday; the UV at altitude is stronger than it feels

Food

Yercaud does not have a large restaurant scene. The GRT Nature Trails resort has a multi-cuisine restaurant open to non-guests. For local food, try the small shops near the lake serving parotta and chicken curry.

The roadside stalls on the ghat road sell fresh jackfruit (March-June) and hill bananas year-round.

Getting there from other cities

If you’re coming from Chennai (340 km) or Bangalore (210 km), you’ll arrive in Salem first. From Salem bus stand or railway station, Yercaud is a 45-minute taxi ride. Many travelers combine a Salem stopover with a Yercaud day trip before continuing to their final destination.

A same-day trip from Salem works well: leave by 7:00 AM, spend 4-5 hours in Yercaud, and return to Salem by 2:00 PM.
